Season Summary: The 1987 Steelers finished 8-7 in a strike-shortened season, but the record didn't tell the full story. Two of those wins came with replacement players, and the team remained inconsistent once the regular roster returned.
Mark Malone was finally benched in favor of Bubby Brister late in the year. Bubby had heart and showed flashes, but also made frequent mistakes. Louis Lipps was still dangerous, Merril Hoge showed promise, and Mike Merriweather continued to play at a high level. But despite their first winning season in 3 years, mediocrity felt like the new normal.
