McMillen & Wife is a time machine for Steelers fans... a way to go back and relive the games, the great players and the unforgettable moments we grew up with. The site has been online since 1997, but it didn't begin as a game archive... or even strictly as a Steelers site. Like a lot of personal websites in the early days of the internet, it was simply my little corner of the web: Steelers, family, guitars, photos, opinions and whatever else interested me. Over the years, the Steelers gradually took over, and a growing collection of old game broadcasts eventually became the centerpiece of the site.

Today, we've preserved and organized a massive archive of full Steelers game broadcasts, along with clips, photos, articles, player tributes and other material collected over nearly three decades. We hope you enjoy watching, reading and digging around. If you're like me, you'll find yourself traveling back in time as you relive each unique era of Steeler football.

What Makes This Place Different

Most Steelers sites are built around news, opinions and whatever happened last Sunday. This one isn't. McMillen & Wife is about preserving the stuff I want to go back and see again... full games, old broadcasts, photos, articles, player tributes and memories from across more than half a century of Steelers football.

There's no fantasy football, gambling spam or clickbait here. No ads, either. The site is built and maintained 100% at our expense. It's simply a collection of things I love, preserved and organized for other Steelers fans who love this stuff, too.

The LONG History of This Site

Thanks, mom!
My love of football comes from my mom. My parents divorced when I was a year old and my dad wasn't part of our lives. Mom never learned to drive and we didn't have a car, so instead of church, Sunday mornings were cinnamon toast and the PBS replay of the Buckeyes game. Woody Hayes. Archie Griffin. Three yards and a cloud of dust. Mom taught us that Xichigan was the enemy, and by age 5, I didn't "give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan." LOL. It was the best of times.

Years later, I relocated to Xichigan for work. When mom was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, we moved her up to Xichigan to be near us. Ironically, she was treated at U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor. Mom stayed true to who she was. When she would go for infusions, she would proudly wear her scarlet and gray Ohio State gear. Nurses and patients would tease her, and she would tease right back. Football gave her a way to find her joy on hard days. We never stopped sharing our love of the Buckeyes together, furiously texting back and forth during games until the day she died in 2016. Love you and miss you, mom.

My Discovery of the Steelers
Back to my childhood. I didn't have a favorite NFL team in those early days. Living in Ohio, most of my extended family leaned Browns, but the talk was usually about how BAD they were, and I wanted no part of that. Super Bowl X hit when I was in 2nd grade. Before the game, I picked Dallas solely based on the cheerleaders (obviously). But by the end of the game, I was a Steelers fan for life. What a great time the '70s were to be a Steelers fan. It was the pinnacle of Steelers greatness, and frankly, the pinnacle of pro football.

Speaking of the '70s, you might think the name of the site has a lot to do with my wife, especially since her lovely picture graces the top of this page. But in reality, it doesn't. It has to do with the '70s TV series "McMillan & Wife" (1971-1977) starring Rock Hudson and Susan St. James. It was a popular show when I started kindergarten, and by 2nd grade, it was my nickname at school.

From 1975 to 1982, the Steelers were the center of my world. They were my childhood heroes. I had a circle of friends who were all Steelers fans, too, and most days we ended up in the park across the street reenacting Bradshaw bombs, Swann leaps, and Lambert hits. If we weren’t watching, we were playing. Those days still shape how I see the game.

Like a lot of people, I drifted in high school when guitars and girls took over. I still watched, but it wasn't the fuel in my engine anymore. Bill Cowher changed that. His teams pulled me back in my 20s. For the first time in my life, I started going to games in person (39 of them to date). Three Rivers, then Heinz Field... I love both. I made road trips, saved ticket stubs, and planned weekends around kickoff. It was a fun time.

Birth of the Site
I launched the McMillen & Wife website in 1997, making it one of the earliest Pittsburgh Steelers fan sites on the web. At the time, there was very little Steelers content online, especially about the classic teams of the '70s. Steelers.com was almost non-existent. But one truly great fan-made site stood out: Eric Wagner's steelref.com. It had '70s era stats, transcripts of old Steelers yearbooks, and a remarkable database for the era. It inspired me to fill in the gaps. The numbers were there, but the color, community, and personality were missing. That became my mission... scan and upload old photos from my books and magazines (many that hung on my wall as a kid), create tribute pages for childhood heroes like Bradshaw, Lambert, Swann, and Franco, and perhaps most of all, connect with other fans who grew up loving the Steelers.

To be clear, the original McMillen & Wife wasn't just a Steelers site. It was a personal homepage in the truest early-internet sense. I posted family pictures, guitars and other pieces of my life right alongside the football stuff. There was no Facebook at the time (not even MySpace), so if I wanted to share something personal, I put it on my website. Over time, that stuff moved to social media and the Steelers became the site focus. But that personal beginning is still a big part of why this site looks and feels the way it does today.

My earliest attempts at a website were made using MS Publisher, which produced terrible results. So I convinced my best friend (a true tech nerd) to teach me HTML. I spent hours watching him code, asking questions, learning, putting the pieces together. Soon I had enough know-how to launch a basic site, and I was off and running. I started on Tripod and Geocities, then moved to my own domain.

I uploaded photos, wrote opinion pieces, and manually transcribed articles from old Pro Football and SI magazines. During the season I posted pre- and postgame thoughts from a fan's perspective. Traffic and enthusiasm followed. My inbox filled with fan emails... stories from the glory days, thoughts on the current team, fan comments and pictures. It was SO fun. There were no message boards in those early days, so I posted the fan emails on the site and a community formed. Along the way, I made lasting friendships, many enduring to this day.

Our Classic Game Collection
At the same time I was building the early site, I was frequenting Steelers newsgroups. If you remember the old newsgroups, they were the "Wild West" of the internet. You never knew what you were going to see there (lol). It was in a newsgroup that, to my absolute delight, I discovered broadcast recordings of '70s Steelers games DID in fact exist! It was a dream come true. My first purchase was a fuzzy-but-watchable recording of Super Bowl XIII on VHS for $20. My head exploded. I was hooked. From there I went on a rampage, adding games as fast as I could. At this point, the games weren't part of the website at all... I was just dipping my toe into collecting. As the collection grew, I eventually posted my list on the site and other collectors found me. Soon, I gained access to first-generation and pristine source recordings of key historic games. My game collection grew. And grew. And grew.

The site grew, too. We added a message board (many iterations over the years) and a unique Mac & Wife community formed... old-school fans, misfits, wise guys, collectors, fellow believers... just a bunch of all-around wonderful people (except for Rex Dawg... what a loser. LOL). Back then, unlike today, it was rare to find conversations about politics, faith, and life on a football board. But we allowed and even encouraged it. That mix made the place fun and helped forge real friendships. We had the kinds of deep, sometimes controversial conversations that you generally can't or won't have in person. It was an interesting time, and I really enjoyed the friendships there.

The Lost Years and the Comeback
Site popularity peaked around 2002. In 2006, a job change and interstate move pulled me away from the site for the next 11 years. Two friends and regulars on the site, Bill Wischmann and Michael Irle, graciously stepped in to provide basic maintenance for several of those years. PGH Connect hosted our site in exchange for banner ads and, somehow, the site stayed alive. Quiet... largely inactive... but still there for anyone who went looking.

From 2012 to 2017, the site was completely dormant. It just sat, neglected and outdated. But when classic Steelers games began popping up on YouTube, I got engaged again. I loved the interaction with other fans in the comments almost as much as I loved watching the games. I already had a YouTube channel (mostly clips of my kids playing sports and music), so I fired up my VCR, converted my library to MP4, and started uploading games. I was absolutely loving it, until one day... everything was BLOCKED globally. Not just my game videos... everybody's games, across all of YouTube.

I was incensed. I'd become addicted to watching those games whenever I wanted. They were a stress reliever and a steady companion on work trips. Suddenly, they were gone. I was pissed and determined to find a way to share these treasures outside of YouTube. So I reworked the old site, and by May of 2017, McMillen & Wife was reborn. New site. New look. New mission. The perfect wife. And now... a streaming game library.

A crazy side note: the only reason the site still existed through the dormant years is that PGH Connect forgot about it on an old server. When I called them to get file transfers set up for the rebuild, they told me they hadn't hosted websites in years. They had no idea the site was even there! Oops. They were amazing and graciously gave me three months to move the site before pulling the plug.

The Latest Rebuild
In the summer of 2025, lost our beloved dog at age 13, and the house went quiet. I needed a diversion, and spending nights tagging games, fixing pages, and tightening the archive gave me something steady to do. It helped me channel my grief toward something productive.

By then, the 2017 version of the site was showing its age, too. More and more people were visiting on phones and tablets, and the game collection had grown so large that simply finding what you wanted was becoming a challenge. So it was time to rebuild the site again... this time making it work well on everything from a phone to a big screen, while keeping the old-school feel of the place.

The archive itself got a major overhaul, too. Games can now be filtered by season, opponent, era, home/away, bad weather, extra content like commercials, halftime shows and pre/postgame material, and more. Scores can be shown or hidden with one click, and every game has a short summary with some history and context. And where we have the material, you can choose the original TV broadcast or watch one of my favorites... the TV broadcast meticulously synced with the original Jack Fleming & Myron Cope radio call.

Coming Full Circle
Most recently, I've started going back to some of the site's earliest Steelers material. Player tributes were among the first Steelers features on McMillen & Wife, long before the game collection became part of the site. Nearly 30 years later, I've come full circle. The Terry Bradshaw and Jack Lambert sections have now been completely rebuilt, combining those original ideas with something I never could have imagined having back then... a huge library of their actual games.

The new tributes include career stats and honors, photos, articles, interviews, Hall of Fame material, greatest performances, full game broadcasts, highlights and much more. Over time, I hope to give other old favorites the same treatment.

Conclusion
After all these years, the idea behind the site is pretty simple. I want to preserve the Steelers football I grew up with, along with the teams and players that came after, and make it easy for other fans to go back and experience it again. The games, the voices, the players, the stories... all of it.

If this site transports you back in time... sitting in the living room with your mom, eating cinnamon toast and watching football on TV... or gathered around the TV with family and friends to watch Lambert and Mean Joe, Rod Woodson and Greg Lloyd, or Big Ben and the Bus... then it's doing what it was made to do. Enjoy the site. It's my Steelers story. If it becomes part of yours, that's the best outcome I can imagine.
