Xichigan answers with a Chad Henne fade to Jason Avant, then grabs the lead on a Mike Hart 1 yd plunge. OSU answers from deep in its own end, ripping off a 99 yd response drive capped by Smith’s 2 yd keeper, then Nugent adds a pair of FGs to send the Buckeyes to halftime up 20-14. The 3rd quarter turns on special teams. Ted Ginn Jr. fields a punt, breaks multiple tackles, breaks outside and hits the jets for an electric 82 yd TD return. The Buckeyes force an punt, and on their ensuing drive, Smith rips off a back-breaking 46 yd scramble on 3rd-and-8 to keep a long drive alive, then zips a 12 yd TD to Santonio Holmes to cap the back-breaking 97 yd drive. Xichigan threatens to score late, but Youboty picks off Henne at the 1. Braylon Edwards scores a 38 yd TD in garbage time, but the Buckeyes close it with another Nugent FG and a late Nate Salley INT. Red shirt freshmen Troy Smith finishes the game with 241 yds passing, 145 yds rushing, and 3 TDs. |
