 1990

1990 Steelers 20 vs Oilers 9
In spite of an anemic offense who is outgained 309-123, Pittsburgh's defense and special teams step up to give the Steelers their first home win vs. an AFC Central foe in nearly 3 years. David Johnson opens the scoring with a 1st quarter INT (1 of 4 Moon INTs on the day) of a pass that glances off the arm of Ernest Givins and returns it 26 yards for an easy TD. Rod Woodson seals the deal in the 4th quarter with a bobbing, weaving 52-yard punt return that leaves five would-be tacklers in his wake on his way to the end zone. A special thanks to Matthew Simon for generously providing us with this game!

1990 Steelers 7 at 49ers 27
An aggressive Pittsburgh secondary holds Montana to just 157 yds passing and intercepts the Hall of Famer twice in the 49ers' first 3 possessions (Woodson and Everett). Unfortunately, Pittsburgh makes a pair of crucial mistakes late in the 3rd quarter, gifting the Niners with 17 points in a 6-minute span. San Francisco leads 10-7 at halftime and makes it 13-7 on a FG with 3:53 left in the 3rd quarter, and that's when disaster strikes. On the ensuing kickoff, rookie Barry Foster walks away from the ball like a punt returner who has decided to let a kick roll dead. Unfotunately, a kickoff is a free ball (unlike a punt) and the 49ers pounce on the live ball inside the Steeler 5. Three plays later, Rathman plows in from the one and the 49ers lead 20-7. One the first play of the 4th quarter, Haley nails Brister on a sack/fumble, the Niners recover at the 17 and score 5 plays later on another short Rathman run. Game over.

1990 Steelers 41 vs Rams 10
The Steelers are victimized for a TD on the opening kickoff, but bounce right back on the strength of 4 Brister TD passes, 3 TDs by Merrill Hoge and overwhelming defense that forces LA into 3 turnovers. Pittsburgh's special teams also amend for their early gaffe with Rod Woodson kickoff returns of 44 and 49 yards (setting up 2 Anderson FGs) and blow the game open in the 3rd quarter when Larry Griffin and Dwight Stone pour in nearly untouched to nail Rams punter Keith English in the backfield at the Rams 6 before he can get the punt away, setting up a 1-yd TD by Hoge.

1990 Steelers 3 at Bengals 27
An ugly, ugly game. Cinci escapes the first half with a 10-0 lead after the Steelers nearly get on the board just 29 seconds before halfime on a fake field goal attempt by holder Jim Stryzinski, but officials rule he is stopped inches short of a TD and Pittsburgh comes away empty. The Bengals extend their lead to 17-0 on their first series in the third quarter, and Barney Bussey puts the nail in Pittsburgh's coffin shortly thereafter when he returns a Louis Lipps fumble 70 yds for a TD and a 24-0 lead.

1990 Steelers 24 at Jets 7
In Joe Walton's return to New York, Brister hits 18 of 24 and throws 2 TDs and O'Brien throws 2 critical INTs as all the bounces go Pittsburgh's way en route to a convincing victory that keeps the 6-5 Steelers tied with Cinci atop the AFC Central. A botched snap on a punt turns into Steelers first down, a flea-flicker with a bounce-pass from Hoge back to Brister turns into a 28-yd pass to Mularkey and a Woodson bobble of a punt return ends up going to the Jets' 27 to set up a TD.

1990 Steelers 35 vs Browns 0
I LOVE this one! The Browns suffer through a comedy of errors, fumbling the ball on the first snap of 3 consecutive drives and ultimately commiting an additional half dozen turnovers (9 total) before the afternoon is over. The shell-shocked Brownies never have a chance and the blank look of utter futility on coach Jim Shofner's hound dog face throughout the game is PRICELESS. Meanwhile, Bubby Brister throws 4 TDs and rookie Barry Foster has his very first 100 yard game.

 1991

1991 Steelers 34 at Bills 52
Jim Kelly throws for 363 yds and a career-high 6 TD passes -- 4 to Don Beebe (10 catches, 112 yds) -- as the Buffalo piles up 537 yds of offense and scores their 2nd-highest point total ever. Despite Buffalo's offensive fireworks, Pittsburgh uses a pair of 3rd-quarter INTs (Woodson and Hinkle) to narrow the score to 31-27 heading into the final period. But Kelly's 3rd and 4th TDs to Beebe snuff out any hopes of a Steeler comeback.

1991 Steelers 14 at Eagles 23
Jim McMahon, filling in for injured Randall Cunningham, hits 22 of 31 for 286 yards and scores on a QB sneak as Philly rallies to defeat the Steelers. Steelers TE Eric Green has a huge first half, catching 6 passes for 118 yds and leading Pittsburgh to a 14-13 halftime lead. But Green disappears in the 2nd half as Bud Carson's defense turns up the heat on Brister, allowing just 40 yds and 3 first downs while dominating time of possession, including over 13 minutes of the 3rd quarter alone. A big time thanks to Matthew Simon for providing us with this game!

1991 Steelers 10 at Cowboys 20
The Steelers, who struggle early and trail 10-0 at halftime in this Thanksgiving Day matchup, fight back and sieze the momentum late in the 2nd half, narrowing the score to 13-10 with 8 minutes left in the game on a 3-yd TD run by Warren Williams. But facing a 3rd and 10 at their own 34, Steve Beuerlein -- subbing for an injured Troy Aikman -- finds Michael Irvin (8 catches, 157 yds) cutting across the middle and hits him in stride for a 66-yd TD. Gary Jones misses a tackle and Irvin shakes off Rod Woodson at the 15-yd line to score standing up. Emmitt Smith is a workhorse, racking up 109 yds and a TD on 32 carries.

1991 Steelers 17 vs Browns 10
Farewell to the Emperor! An opportunistic Steelers defense gives Chuck Noll a win over the Belichick-coached Browns in Noll's final game. Bubby Brister completes only 7 of 26 passes for 113 yds, but one of his completions is a nice little slant to speedy Dwight Stone who picks up a fantastic block from Louis Lipps and takes it 65 yards for the score in the 3rd quarter. And while Brister's counterpart Bernie Kosar throws for 335 yards, Cleveland's 5 turnovers (3 INTs) are too much to overcome. Gary Anderson has an uncharacteristically bad day, going 1-4 on FGs. Thankfully, CB Richard Shelton has the game of his life by snagging the only 3 interceptions of his career, the last of which he returns 57 yards to put the Steelers up 17-7. Lot's of postgame material. A special thanks to Keith "Crash" Froehlich for generously providing us with this historic game.

 1992

1992 Steelers 29 at Oilers 24
Bill Cowher's first game as head coach! Trailing 14-0 early in the game, Cowher shows he has some major Kahunas, calling a brilliant fake punt that goes all the way to the 1 yard line to get the Steelers back in it. As usual, Rod Woodson is phenomenal, snagging 2 of Warren Moon's 5 interceptions including a HUUUGE drive-ending pick in the end zone and subsequent 60 yard return to set up the Steelers' winning TD. O'Donnell is particularly clutch all afternoon (14 of 23, 223 yds, 2 YD, 0 Int) and Barry Foster is nearly unstoppable (26 carries, 107 yds, 1 TD). A fantastic debut to Cowher's head coaching career and a portend of great things to come.

1992 Steelers 27 vs Jets 10
Perhaps New York is jinxed by the obscene gesture coach Bruce Coslett makes while leaving the field at halftime? Whatever the cause, the Jets simply implode after playing to a 10-10 tie through 3 quarters. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Barry Foster (33 carries, 190 yds, 2 TD) breaks a tackle, turns the corner and goes 54-yds for a TD. The Jets have a chance to tie following a Foster fumble, but Browning Nagle throws a terrible pick and the Steelers turn it into a FG. On the next drive, Nagel injures his finger and backup Ken O'Brien comes off the bench an proceeds to throw 3 INT's in 4 pass attmepts, one of which is returned 64 yds for a TD by Larry Griffin to put the nail in the Jets' coffin.

1992 Steelers 3 at Packers 17
Brett who? "Favre like Carve." In his first-ever NFL start, the future Hall of Fame QB "carves" up the 3-0 Steelers in remarkably easy fashion, hitting 14 of 19 for 210 yds and burning HoF CB Rod Woodson not once but twice with pump-fakes for TDs including a 76-yd bomb to Sterling Sharpe. Meanwhile, nothing comes easily for the Steelers. Neil O'Donnell is intercepted twice and his receivers drop 7 passes, including an unforgivable drop of a 27-yd TD by Dwight Stone at the goal line. Jeff Graham, Ernie Mills, Charles Davenport, Barry Foster and Merril Hoge also drop passes. Even Gary Anderson has a rough day, being carried from the field after suffering a blocked chip-shot field goal from the 20. A Mac & Wife shout out to Matthew Simon for generously providing us with this game!

1992 Steelers 20 vs Bengals 0 MNF
Dwight Stone drops 3 of 4 passes thrown his way before setting up the first of his 2 scoring catches with a 30-yd run on a reverse in the 2nd quarter. Stone's 2nd TD catch is set up when Greg Lloyd blasts Boomer Esiason from behind, popping the ball loose deep in Cinci territory (recovered by Jerrol Williams) and knocking Easiason out of the game. Barry Foster has a nice evening (108 yds on 24 carries) as the Steelers cruise to a relatively easy victory over the hapless Bengals.

1992 Steelers 27 at Chiefs 3 TNF
Rod Woodson sets the tone in a typical "All-World" performance, returning a punt 80 yards for a TD, body slamming running backs, intercepting a pass and defensing everything thrown in his general direction as the Steelers scalp the Chiefs. Greg Lloyd is also particularly frightening as the young "pre-Blitzburgh" defense crucifies Dave Kreig on Thursday Night Football. Offensively, Barry Foster leads the way with 105 yds and a TD on 24 carries.

1992 Steelers 21 vs Oilers 20
Barry Foster is absolutely superb in this battle for 1st place in the AFC Central, shredding Houston with his 6th 100 yard game of the season. Rod Woodson also comes up big, DESTROYING Warren Moon with a viciius hit on a blitz and knocking him out of the game. After a pitiful start, O'Donnell (who's earlier fumble inside the 10 gave the Oilers a 20-7 lead) gets hot late and gives the Steelers a 21-20 lead on his 10th straight completion, a TD to Eric Green. Houston battles back to set up Del Greco for a 39 yard FG to win the game on the final play, but the kick is wide left.

1992 Steelers 17 vs Lions 14
In spite of occasional blizzard-like conditions and a very shaky game by the favored Steelers, Detroit finds a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. The Lions seem poised to take a commanding 21-10 4th quarter lead lead after Barry Sanders scampers 42-yds to the Steelers 2-yard line. But the opportunity is squandered when Sanders is swarmed by tacklers on 3rd down and coughs up the ball (recovered by Woodson). Detroit still leads 14-10 with under 4 minutes remaining when Woodson absolutely DESTROYS Erik Kramer on a corner blitz, forcing Detroit's 5th turnover of the day. Carnell Lake scoops up the loose ball and returns it to the Lions' 3-yd line where Bubby Brister, playing for the first time all season in relief of an injured O'Donnell, throws a 1-yd TD to complete the Steeler rally.

1992 Steelers 30 vs Colts 14
Barry Foster carries 28 times for 168 yds and scores 2 TDs as he breaks Franco Harris' 1972 team record with his 8th 100-yd game of the season. With backup QBs Jack Trudeau and Bubby Brister starting because of injuries to both team's starters, the Steelers use Foster's rushing, a dominating first half by their defense and 3 INTs (2 by rookie Darren Perry) to take a 27-7 lead. By game's end, the Steelers outrush the Colts 253-71 and hold a 15-minute advantage in time of possession.

1992 Steelers 21 at Bengals 9
The Steelers set a team record with 10 sacks of rookie QB David Klingler in his NFL debut. While Klingler is running for his life, Barry Foster (25 carries, 102 yds, 2 TD) runs his way into Pittsburgh's record book by surpassing Franco's 1975 single-season record for rushing yards. Pittsburgh's special teams chip in as well when Charles Davenport scoops up a loose ball on a botched fake punt attempt by Cinci on their opening drive and takes it 34 yds for an easy TD.

1992 Steelers 23 vs Browns 13
Barry Foster (26 carries, 103 yds, 1 TD) ties an NFL record with his 12th 100-yd game of the season as the Steelers secure their first home playoff game since 1982. Bubby Brister, still subbing for an injured Neil O'Donnell, plays his best game of the season, completing 18 of 25 for 223 yards, including 11 of 13 in the first half after receivers drop his first 2 passes. The Browns blow one opportunity after another, converting their 4 red zone trips into only 2 FGs thanks to a Rod Woodson INT and sack/fumble by Jerrol Williams (recovered by DJ Johnson). That fumble, which occurs with 1:09 left in the game, allows Barry foster (who had 92 yds at the time) to gain 11 yds and tie Eric Dickerson's 1984 NFL record of 12 100-yd games.

1992 AFC Playoffs Steelers 3 vs Bills 24
The game starts out well enough when the Steelers stuff the Bills on 4th and 1 near midfield on their opening drive and the Steelers quickly advance to the Buffalo 12. But Darryl Talley sacks Neil O'Donnell for a 9-yd loss on 3rd down and the Steelers settle for an Anderson FG and a 3-0 lead. The Steelers are driving toward another score when Nate Odomes picks off O'Donnell at the 34. Buffalo fails to convert that turnover into points, but they cash in on their next opportunity when Bruce Smith sack/strips O'Donnell near midfield. Frank Reich drives Buffalo 59 yds in 9 plays, capped by a 1-yd TD pass with 1:56 to go in the half. O'Donnell attempts a 2-minute drill but is intercepted again at the Buffalo 18 to bring the half to a close. Even with Barry Foster running well (104 yds on 20 carries), the Steelers fail to cross the goal line. When Rod Woodson leaves the game due to a head injury, Reich quickly takes advantage, hitting James Lofton for a 17-yd TD over Woodson's backup, Sammy Walker. Trailing 14-3, the Steelers keep fighting and drive to the Buffalo 15, but a low snap on a FG try gets away from holder Mark Royals and the Bills take over on downs. The wheels come off in the 4th quarter as the veteran Bills add 10 points to finish off the upstart Steelers.

 1993

1993 Steelers 13 vs 49ers 24
Despite a broken thumb on his throwing hand, Steve Young hits l3 of his first 15 passes for 128 yds and 2 TDs in the first 15 minutes and 6 seconds of the game. Meanwhile, Barry Foster fumbles on Pittsburgh's opening drive and Mike Tomczak throws 2 INTs while completing only 4 of 11 for 46 yds before being replaced by Neil O'Donnell in the 2nd half. O'Donnell, who was not expected to play due to elbow tendinitis, completes 9 of 16 for 92 yds and directed scoring drives on his first two possessions. Rod Woodson sparks the defense with 2 second half INTs to keep momentum building and two Gary Anderson field goals bring the Steelers to within 17-13 with 2:34 left in the 3rd quarter. But Young clinches the victory by going 5 for 5 for 55 yds on an 80-yd drive capped by a 5-yd scoring pass to Jones.

1993 Steelers 34 vs Bengals 7
With Pittsburgh looking to rebound from a shaky 0-2 start, the Bengals are exactly what the doctor ordered. The Steelers find both their offense (404 yds) and their defense (allowing only 170 yds with just 38 in the 2nd half) to notch their first win of the young season. An efficient Neil O'Donnell hits 21 of 25 for 3 TDs while Barry Foster gains 103 yds on 23 carries and leads the team with 5 receptions. The Steelers out-rush Cinci 223-44 and have an 11-1/2 minute edge in time of possession. Also features a sweet 39-yd punt return by Woodson.

1993 Steelers 45 at Falcons 17 MNF
Amazingly, the Falcons suffer this brutal thrashing in spite of scoring 14 first quarter points on a 97-yd kick return and a 46-yd fumble return. But sloppy play on both sides of the ball ultimately dooms Atlanta as the Steelers feast on turnovers, turnovers and more turnovers (6 total) including 2 INTs by NFL Defensive Player of the Year Rod Woodson. Barry Foster gains only 63 yds on 20 carries but scores 3 TDs, and Neil O'Donnell is sharp (19 of 25, 259 yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) as the Steelers run away with it in the 2nd half. Features the only offensive rushing play of Rod Woodson's career, an end around in which Rod runs for about 30 yds but gains only 6 inches. LOL.

1993 Steelers 16 vs Chargers 3
Pittsburgh's defense is suffocating, allowing only 19 yds in 20 carries, and player of the game Greg Lloyd is particularly ferocious, recording numerous sacks, tackles for losses, and forcing 2 fumbles including one returned for a TD by Levon Kirkland. San Diego's only real scoring threat of the afternoon is thwarted when Kevin Green BLASTS QB John Friesz, forcing an interception and sending Friesz to the sidelines with a concussion. Barry Foster shines with 110 yds on 23 carries.

1993 Steelers 37 vs Saints 14
As a huge Rod Woodson fan, this is one of my favorite games. Woodson completely dominates from the outset, putting on one of the finest performances by a defensive back you will ever see. The first quarter is literally a Woodson highlight reel as Rod intercepts 2 passes (the first of which he returns 63 yards for a TD, the second setting up a Barry Foster TD) and bats away numerous other passes, not to mention some excellent punt returns. Wade Wilson finishes 6 of 23 for 85 yds, 0 TDs and 3 INTs and is sacked 5 times while Saints running backs muster only 22 rushing yards. Simply OUTSTANDING defense. A huge THANK YOU to Keith "Crash" Froehlich for graciously replacing my destroyed recording of this game!

1993 Steelers 23 at Browns 28
The infamous "Metcalf Game." With Neil O'Donnell passing for a career-high 355 yds and Vinny Testaverde knocked out after a vicious 4th-quarter hit by Kevin Greene, it appears the Steelers will emerge from Cleveland Stadium with a win. Statistically, it's a game they should've won, outgaining Cleveland by more than 200 yds and owning a 13-minute advantage in time of possession. But with a 23-21 lead and facing a fourth down on their 22-yard line, the Steelers make the mistake of punting the ball where Metcalf could return it. Metcalf had already returned a punt 91 yds for a TD early in the 2nd quarter. With 2:05 to play, Metcalf fields Royals' punt along the right sideline, picks up a pair of crushing blocks, then darts and dodges 75-yds to the end zone for the winning TD as Cleveland Municipal Stadium goes absolutely bonkers.

1993 Steelers 24 at Bengals 16
The Steelers get an early scare as O'Donnell gets off to a miserable start. Trailing 3-0, the Steelers drive to the Cinci 6 only to have O'Donnell throw the ball right to a Cinci DB who races 96 yards for a TD. On Pittsburgh's next offensive play, O'Donnell fumbles the snap leading to another Cinci TD and a 16-0 deficit. NOD redeems himself when he hits Eric Green deep down the middle for a 71 yard TD pass and the game is all Pittsburgh from there as the Steelers come back to beat the winless Bengals. LB Chad Brown performs well in his first start (2 sacks and a forced fumble) and Barry Foster (25 carries, 120 yds, 1 TD) is unstoppable.

1993 Steelers 23 vs Bills 0 MNF
An absolutely flawless game both offensively and defensively for the Steelers on Monday Night as the Steelers deliver the first of many Buffalo thumpings to come at Three Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh physically dominates the Bills from start to finish, owning a 44:51-15:09 edge in time of possession and outgaining Buffalo 400 to 157. Thurman Thomas is a non-factor and Jim Kelly has a miserable first half before getting knocked out of the game on the final play before halftime. Frank Reich fares no better in the second half in the face of a relentless Blitzburgh pass rush as the Steelers pitch a shutout. Game features Gary Jones' bone-jarring sideline hit on Don Beebe at the 96:11 mark.

1993 Steelers 17 vs Patriots 14
Another nailbiter as the Steelers fall behind 14-0 early and claw their way back in the 2nd quarter to win. Despite throwing 5 interceptions, rookie Drew Bledsoe finds himself poised at the 1-inch line on the game's final play. Fortunately for the Steelers, Bledsoe's game-ending QB sneak is turned back (barely) to preserve a Steeler victory. Pittsburgh wins despite being outgained 349-217 and passing for only 92 net yards.

1993 Steelers 21 at Dolphins 20 MNF
Steve Deberg (in for injured Dan Marino) moves the ball well all night, but four 1st half trips deep into the red zone yield only 2 FGs. Miami squanders another opportunity when Deberg hits Kirby for a 47-yard catch-and-run, but Woodson chops the ball out and Lake recovers at the Miami 2. Just before the half, yet another promising Dolphin drive stalls at the Steeler 4 resulting in only a FG and a 7-6 deficit. The Steelers open the 2nd half with an impressive 16-play, 84-yard drive culminating in a short Leroy Thompson TD run. The teams trade punts until Deberg, pressured by Kevin Green, throws a lollypop to Carnell Lake who returns it 37 yds to the Miami 18. O'Donnell capitalizes with short TD pass to Merril Hoge on the first play of the 4th quarter for a 21-6 lead. Miami keeps fighting and narrows the score to 21-13 on a Deberg TD pass, and poor Steelers special teams once again give up a punt return for a TD, this one 72 yards to O.J. McDuffie to make the score 21-20 with 6:37 left. Miami gets the ball back at the 10 yd line with 2:19 remaining and begins to drive, but sacks by Kevin Green and Carnell Lake give the ball back to Pittsburgh on downs. Rod Woodson seals the deal by intercepting Deberg's last gasp pass.

1993 Steelers 16 vs Browns 9
Needing a win to make the playoffs, Pittsburgh's offense seems determined not to win for much of the game. The struggling Steelers trail 9-3 at halftime as O'Donnell suffers 7 sacks, receivers drop easy passes (multiple drops by Eric Green and Jeff Graham) and the offense continues to sputter to the obvious displeasure of the Three Rivers crowd. Even more displeased is LB Greg Lloyd, who's legendary expletive-filled halftime tirade challenging the seemingly lackadaisical offense to do their part lights a fire under the team and sparks Pittsburgh's 2nd half comeback. Lloyd, who is playing even though he was expected to miss the game due to a bad hamstring, does his part by forcing 2 critical Cleveland fumbles in the 2nd half. Eric Green makes up for his first half drops by catching 3 passes on the game-winning drive, including a 14-yd TD from O'Donnell.

1993 AFC Wildcard Steelers 24 at Chiefs 27 OT
After failing to complete his first 7 passes, Joe Montana is perfect on his final 5, leading the Chiefs on a 65-yard drive capped by Nick Lowery's winning kick in overtime. Early on, the Steelers appear to be firmly in control after a huge Gerald Williams sack of Montana on a 4th and 1 play gives Pittsburgh the ball at midfield and sets up a Steeler TD for a 17-7 halftime lead. The Chiefs fight back to tie the game at 17 early in the 4th, but O'Donnell hits Green for a 22-yd TD and a 24-17 lead with 4 minutes to play and the Steelers again appear to be in control. If not for a huge breakdown on special teams (a recurring theme throughout '93), Montana and Lowery might never have had a chance to pull off their comeback. But with 2-1/2 minutes left, Keith Cash bursts nearly untouched through the line to block Mark Royals' punt, which Fred Jones scoops up and returns to the Steeler 9, serving Montana a chance to tie on a silver platter. A special thanks to Matthew Simon for digitizing this game for us!

Perspective: The Factory of Sadness
It's interesting (and illustrative of how consistently good the Steelers really are) that as bad as things seemed during the "Dark Years" of the 1980's, the Steelers still made the playoffs 4 times and only suffered 3 seasons with a losing record.

Contrast those results with the last 15 years of futility from the "Factory of Sadness" in Cleveland:

    • 1 winning season
    • ZERO playoff appearances.
