• Named 1976 NFL Defensive player of the Year, was a unanimous All-Pro selection and appeared in his straight 2nd Pro Bowl, was elected the Steelers' MVP by his teammates, recovered team record 6 fumbles, led team in tackles.

• Selected to his 3rd consecutive Pro Bowl in 1977, led team in tackles.

• Selected to his 4th consecutive Pro Bowl in 1978, consensus All-Pro, made the College and Pro Football News All NFL first team and the NEA 2nd team and the UPI, Pro Football Weekly and Sporting News All AFC first team, led team in tackles.

• Named 1979 NFL Defensive player of the Year, named UPI AFC Defensive Player of the Year, was a near-unanimous All Pro first team selection, made AP, NEA, and Pro Football Weekly All NFL 1st teams and UPI and Sporting News All AFC 1st team, selected to 5th consecutive Pro Bowl, topped all NFL linebackers in interceptions with six, led team in tackles.

• Selected to his 6th consecutive Pro Bowl in 1980, All-Pro, received first team All NFL honors from AP, Pro Football Writers, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, and Pro Football Weekly, led team in tackles.

• Elected Steelers' team MVP for 2nd time in 1981, was selected as All-Pro, received near-unanimous first team All NFL honors from AP, Pro Football Writers, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, Pro Football Weekly and NEA, selected to his 7th consecutive Pro Bowl in 1981, led team in tackles.

• In spite of major transition to 3-4 scheme in 1982, was again All-Pro & received more 1st team All NFL recognition than any other linebacker including AP, Pro Football Writers, Sports Illustrated and Pro Football Weekly, selected to his 8th consecutive Pro Bowl, led team in tackles.

• Selected to his 9th consecutive Pro Bowl in 1983, led team in tackles.
