Predictions for Week 8: Steelers vs Patriots
All About Turnovers
Steelers must play mistake-free
Article by McMillen & Wife

The Pats have beaten us the last three times we've played them for two reasons: turnovers and sloppy special teams.

If we win (or tie) the turnover battle and don't give up any huge special teams plays, I think we will win this game.

Even though the bigger mismatch seems to be New England's offense vs. our banged-up defense, it's the Patriot's defense that I fear. They're the ones who have been winning all those games.

It will be interesting to see how Roethlisberger reacts to having one less wide receiver. Ty Law has shown repeatedly that he can shut down either Burress or Ward, which allows the Pats to double-cover on the other side. As a result, Ben is gonna have to go to his 3rd read a lot, something he has shown a remarkable ability to do thus far. Randle El will need to have a big game and I expect him to be the primary guy on a lot of plays. I also think we'll see Staley have a big receiving day.

Expect a lot of play-action and a lot of underneath crossing routes. Running is certainly a key, but I wouldn't be surprised if we come out gunning it early before settling into a balanced attack. We need an early score to chip away some of the mystique surrounding that Patriot winning streak.

But don't forget that Ben has a little mystique of his own going right now. If he has a little early success, it will do wonders for our oh-so-important running game. Eventually, we're gonna have to settle into the run and pound it. Protect the ball, Duce!

Defensively, we've gotta attack relentlessly, even if it means giving up some big plays. We've seen too many times what happens if you try to play bend-don't-break against these guys. LeBeau needs to get heat on Brady, but more importantly, needs to stop Dillon. The Pats will try to pound the middle to see how the loss of Casey Hampton has affected us. Hopefully, this early probing will lead to a couple of 3-and-outs for the Pats. We'll see. A lot rests on our D-line. If we can't get any pressure on the QB AND have trouble stopping the run, we're doomed. Blitz, blitz, blitz! Hopefully, we'll create a couple of turnovers.

And again... turnovers are the key.

Gonna be a tough one that comes down to a Jeff Reed field goal: Steelers 20, Patriots 17.
