The Look of Fear
We pressured the hell out of old man Gannon. I saw fear in his face more than a few times.
Reaction to Week 1: Steelers 24, Raiders 21
Lot's 'O Positives
Healthy O-Line leads the way

Article by Johna Klym (aka, "Hootie")

We are still undefeated, and there are a lot of positives to take away from our 24-21 win over the Raiders as well!

The O-line was able to hold off the defense to give Tommy time to throw. Surprisingly, Maddox was also not the statue that he was last year, scrambling around a few times to pick up first downs. I was very impressed with this, considering he was totally immobile last season. If he can keep up this level of play, he will be an excellent teacher for young Big Ben. In addition, the line opened up holes for Duce to run for almost 100 yards. Duce is a definite improvement over Zero-way, and it was good to see the team's huge show of commitment to the run. And although Bettis only saw action as a specialist, if he only gains 100 yards this season but scores 70 touchdowns, that's perfectly okay with me!

We also generated a lot of pressure on the QB, a welcome sight after our pitiful defensive showing last season. And Larry Foote had me thinking "Kendrell who?" I thought his play was inspired, proving that if Kendrell can't fulfill the promise of his rookie season, we have a back-up that can step in and make things happen. Clark Haggans was also very impressive. His broken hand certainly did not seem to hinder his play.

Another thing that impressed me was Aaron Smith's big 50-yard return. He's another player who started out strong with us and seemed to dwindle later. This game against the Raiders was a great rebirth for him and I look forward to seeing more of his inspired play throughout the season.

Here are a few things I think we need to work on:

• Get Plex the ball more. He was only thrown to 2 or 3 times. I realize that most of the time he's double-covered, but the guy is playing for his future this season. Let's give him a chance to show what he can do. The team can only benefit from his spectacular catches.

• Sacking the opposing QB. Yes, we pressured the hell out of old man Gannon. I saw fear in his face a few times. But we need to plant the QB's butt on the ground and cause loss of yards. We need to push the opponent back. I expect the defense to totally ring Kyle Boller's bell this coming weekend.

• Watch out for the long balls. Our secondary, though improved, still needs some work. Gannon almost killed us with his patented long bombs. That 58-yard reception was totally inexcusable. And knowing that that was the Raiders longest reception since 2002 didn't make me feel any better about it. I know there's the new chuck rule to contend with, but our defenders need to play closer to the receivers.

• Quit playing conservative. We came out at the beginning of the game with fire in our eyes and the hunger of winning in our bellies. I could sense it the whole way out here in Vegas. When we got ahead 14-0, I fully expected us to keep the momentum going and maybe bring in Big Ben near the end of the 4th quarter. Instead, we squandered our lead by trying to control the clock (good) and playing safe on defense (bad). I would rather have seen us bury them 42-0 with Bettis punching in a few more touchdowns.

All-in-all, I think we have a lot of positives going for our team, especially with the O-line healthy, a strong running back, and an inspired defense. Hopefully they will apply more pressure this week against Baltimore and bury Kyle.
