Key Stats & Facts
Turnovers: Cleveland 5, Steelers 0. Need we say more? All of Pittsburgh's points came as a direct result of Cleveland turnovers.
Cleveland 0-4 in the red zone, and 0-3 goal-to-go! Wow! Four trips into the red zone (three times inside the 5) and only 6 points to show for it? Amazing! Hats off to the defense, especially Kendrell Bell for his near-decapitation of James Jackson at the 1-foot line. Bell's hit set the tone for that goal-line stand and in my mind was the key play of the game.
Stayin' Alive! We're barely breathing folks, but for now, we live to fight another day. Thank you, Lord!

Nice to Meet You!
Kendrell Bell delivers a crushing, "Nice to meet you" blow (a la the Bud Light castaway commercial) to Browns RB James Jackson. Talk about a message in a bottle! Wow!

Still a Believer
The Merril Hoge connection
Article by McMillen & Wife
I've been thinking about Merril Hoge a lot this week. An average player at best, but I have some great memories of him, particularly how his inspired play helped elevate our slumping 1989 team into the playoffs.
Many of you have probably noticed that I've brought up the 1989 season repeatedly this year, but I think certain parallels with our current Steelers are undeniable. Even though we finished only 9-7 and lost to Denver in the playoffs in 1989, it was one of the greatest seasons ever for me, and Merril Hoge was a big part of it.
The Steelers, coming off a horrid 5-11 season in 1988, opened the 1989 season by being annihilated by the Browns 51-0 in Pittsburgh, and getting crushed by Cinci 42-10 the following week. Anybody who thinks we're a laughing stock right now should've seen what it was like to be a Steeler fan living in Ohio back then.
Anyway, Chuck Noll (who should've won Coach of the Year honors in 1989... it was his best coaching job EVER) somehow held his very young team together (much like Cowher is now) as the Steelers sputtered through the first 10 games of the regular season. The Steelers got blasted by Denver 34-7 in week 9, then got shut out 20-0 by Chicago in week 10 and seemed to be headed back to the basement. But somehow, the team held together and rebounded to win 5 of 6 down the stretch, including a HUGE win in Tampa Bay in which Hoge (who was actually the team's 2nd leading rusher behind Tim Worley in '89) ran for over 100 yards. Hoge was superb in that game, as was Rod Woodson.
Simply beating Tampa wasn't enough to get us into the playoffs, however. In order to get in, we needed losses by the Dolphins, Colts, Bengals, and Raiders. The Steelers played one of their best games of the year in Tampa, then waited to see where the chips fell.
They all fell our way. It was one of the happiest football moments of my life!
The following week, we traveled to Houston for a playoff game and were expected to lose big (they had beaten us 27-0 in Houston earlier in the year). But again Hoge came to play, running for over 100 yards and scoring a game-tying TD to send the game into overtime, where the Steelers won on a 50-yard Gary Anderson field goal.
It's mayhem! It's pandemonium!
The Steelers fell a John Elway comeback short of making it to the AFC Championship as the Broncos beat us 24-23 (Denver, of course, went on to beat Cleveland to win the honor of being crucified 55-10 by San Fran). But the Steelers played tough in their losing effort (remember, the Broncos had crushed us 34-7 earlier in the year) and I was as proud of our team after that season as I've ever been... and that includes the Super Bowl years.
1989 and Merril Hoge are a couple of the reasons I continue to have hope for this season. If we could do it then, we can do it now. We just need the Merril Hoges and Thomas Everetts of this team to step up. Somebody has got to make a play every week. And that's what we saw in Cleveland last Sunday.
Kendrell Bell stepped up. His crushing, "Nice to me you" hit (a la the Bud Light castaway commercial) on Jackson during that season-turning goal line stand will stay with me for a long time (I suspect it'll stay with Jackson for a while, too). Brent Alexander stepped up. His interception in the end zone was HUGE! James Farrior stepped up with his sure tackling and remarkable coverage skills. Jerome Bettis stepped up by being Jerome Bettis. And perhaps best of all, young players like Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu came in and did their part. And though the win was ugly, it was exactly the kind of gritty win we kept getting over and over down the stretch in 1989.
Do you believe in miracles, bruthas and sistas? I remember 1989, and let me tell you... I still believe.

P.S. -- It's worth noting that we beat Cleveland 17-7 in our second meeting in 1989, erasing some of the sting of the earlier shellacking they gave us. Once again, the similarities to this season are almost erie... but not Lake Erie. That would smell.

Comment: Re: Merril Hoge
Tim, its nice to see someone givng one of my favorite players some props (see my picks of favorite running backs)...
Hoge gave me some great Steelers memories, too.
He wasn't overladen with natural talent and feel for the position, though he was a well-toned athlete.
What he was overladen with was an important Steelers Trait... Heart, and a lot of it.
Good call on this one.
Oh, yeah, Happy Thanksgiving. If Sandy cooks as well as she looks, you're gonna outweigh me by the end of the day.

Comment: Memories: Not "the" OCBs but CBs none the less
Yeah the Oily Stain Playoff game of 1989!
Those Cheatin' Bastards!
That was the game where the Toilet Dome Clock Keeper on direction from the Adams family and Jerry CB Glanville did some creative clock management.
It was also the game where after a series of cheap shots thru the entire game Chuck Noll told Glanville that if he ever pulled that kind of crap again that he (Glanville) would have to deal with him on a, let's say, "personal" level!
I got the opportunity to remind Jerry, of that game, in the lobby of the Pittsburgh Hilton, a few years later. The elevator doors opened and there he was. I said; "your '89 cheatin bastard Oily stains clock keeping crap didn't work did it!" The doors closed and he just looked wide eyed and dumbfounded. I talked to him later and he was cool about it but, I wasn't going to let him forget it. I forgot about Chuck Noll threatening him at the time or I would have reminded him of that too!
I now work with a relative of his (Glanville) and he promised to remind Jerry of that fateful encounter.
Another memory of that game was in the summer of 1990 and I had met Mike Turbo Tongue Terry just that spring. We worked together and with a common interest in the Steelers, we struck up a friendship.
After working a late shift and a bit of late night revelry Mike and I decided to watch some Steelers football, a "Summer Cooler," so to speak.
Mike had the '89 playoff game on VHS and we started watching it about 2:00 am. We were freakin' and slobbering, yellin' and screaming like it was a live game (Yes... the neighbors & my roommates loved me ).
What a game...into over time we go... It is now like 5:00 in the morning and shortly into overtime the tape runs out...
I said, to Mike; "put in the second tape." Mike says; "There is no second tape."
...huh?
Man was I pissed...
He should have, could have said something before hand!
Then Mike, who live about 3/4 of a mile down the road, in the Kennedy Compound , had the nerve to ask for a ride home...
...got to love him.
Let's just say he walked home carrying his incomplete tape with him.
Mike, I love yah...He has made up for it many times over and I only bring it up because I always think of it when that game is mentioned.
Doofus...
To all Happy Thanksgiving!

Yes.
Quote: he didnt tell you sorry like noyfbs rod woodson story
He didn't have the chance, he was going to get off the elevator but I blocked him. I wasn't asking for his autograph and never would. I do still have a J.G. card that some of us Steeler Fans all took a bite out of and chewed up and spit out. After the chunkage dried I taped them together and wrote on it; "Annie (my late great dog) sleeps on the couch...Jerry stays on the floor!"
I still have it on the floor, under my desk, 3 moves and 12 years later. Some traditions die hard... :lol
BTW: Jeff don't feel bad. I overheard Rod's "late for the meeting" story from Rod before. If any of you ever get the chance... ask Rod if he remembers TWO orangutans chasing him to his "meeting" some years ago or if he slid some scratch to his Shoe Sniffing Bud Chris Dishman after his shoe commercial.
I won't explain but...He'll know what your talking about.
Don't tell 'em Tim.

Comment: Playoff Game Houston
What I remember was the interview after the game. They asked Merril Hoge to discribe the game tying touchdown play. He said, "Well I caught the ball, and I took it in!" That was it. It was reminicent of a Monty Python skit where John Cleese tells Eric Idle about a game winning goal, "Well Olie, I saw the ball, & I put it in the net."
