Key Stats & Facts
Red Zone Efficiency: Titans 2 for 2, Steelers 1 for 5 -- This, my friends, is how you own an 11-minute edge in time of possession and still lose a football game. Totally unacceptable.
Total Yards: Steelers 376, Titans 198 -- Wow. We held the Titans under 200 yards and STILL lost on Tommy's scatter-armed passes. I came away feeling pretty much like I did after the Texans game from last year.
2 INT returns for 109 yards by Titans. -- What an awful day for Tommy Maddox. Hopefully, it was simply an aberration, because we can't afford for Maddox to fall victim to a sophomore jinx, folks.

That sucked.
Tommy Maddox air-mailed 16 easy points to the Titans in a frustrating loss.

Tommy Throws It Away
Maddox' suffers through worst performance since Texans debacle
Article by McMillen & Wife
'Ya know, if Sunday's game vs. the Titans had been played on my X-Box, I'd be demanding to know which one of you wise-asses snuck into the edit screen when I wasn't looking and maxed out the "suck" control on Tommy Maddox. Tommy was simply brutal, people.
No need jump ship on Tommy just yet, folks.
True, Maddox just sufferred through his worst performance since the Texans debacle last year. And yes, his pair of bonehead interceptions (along with that Bernie Kosar-like safety) were the primary reasons we lost the game. But I think what happened to Tommy vs. the Titans was an aberration, not the shape of things to come. He'll be fine. He HAS to be fine, because I don't even wanna consider the alternative.
What's up with our red-zone INefficiency?
I've been scratching my head over the play calling all year. Perhaps Mularkey should tie a string around his finger to remind him that the goal of the offense is to score TDs, not kick FGs. Five trips into the red zone (four of them inside the 10-yard line) and all we have to show for it is 13 lousy points??? Only ONE TD in FIVE stinking tries (not to mention ZERO points twice)??? It's bad enough that Maddox' scatter-brained play spotted the Titans 16 easy points... but to have our offense leave an additional 18 points (-8 by settling for FGs, -3 for a missed FG and -7 for not scoring in 4 tries from the one) on the field in the form of missed scoring opportunies is over the top.
BTW, I realize that our final trip inside the red zone would've had no effect on the outcome of the game, but to have four shots at the end zone from the friggin' one-yard line and not be able to punch it is DISPICABLE! Where was the Bus in that situation? What were Cowher & Mularkey thinking?
For the "fun" of it, here's how our five red zone possessions went:
1: 16 plays, 77 yards to Titans 8-yard line = 3 points.
2: 9 plays, 64 yards ending in 5-yard TD run = 7 points.
3: 10 plays, 55 yards to Titans 8-yard line = 3 points.
4: 7 plays, 55 yards to Titans 12-yard line = 0 points (missed FG).
5: 10 plays, 81 yards to Titans 1-yard line = 0 points (TOV on downs).
Pretty sickening, isn't it? THAT, my friends, is a textbook example of how a team holds an 11-minute edge in time of possession and still loses. Missed scoring opportunities will kill you if you don't play an otherwise clean game.
Does Joey Porter REALLY believe the defense "dominated?"
I read somewhere on our message board that Joey Porter actually claimed our defense "dominated." I sincerely hope it was a misquote, because if Joey really believes that, perhaps that bullet in Denver also caused a little brain damage.
I don't mean to disrespect Joey, because I love the guy. But I'm not gonna be lulled into thinking our defense is playing well simply because teams aren't piling up yardage. This is a time of possession issue, plain and simple. McNair had the opportunity to throw only 16 passes... he completed 15 of them (a whopping 94% completion rate), including 3 EASY TDs. That's dominating defense? Don't think so.
On paper, yeah, our defense held the Titans to just 198 yards. Fine and dandy. That will keep us among the AFC's best in total yardage allowed. YeeeHaaa! But let's face it... it was McNair who dominated this game. Chad Scott and DeWayne Washington were horrific. We forced ZERO turnovers, recorded just one sack and as McNair's stats can attest, we pressured the QB occasionally at best.
The bottom line is, you can't have your starting corners being repeated beaten like a couple of ugly stepchildren (the lack of pressure generated by the front seven didn't help their cause) and claim to have dominated. Aside from Kendrell Bell, who was ferocious enough to earn my player of the week honors, our defense played a mediocre game at best.
My main question about Scott & Washington is this: why, Tim Lewis, when these guys CLEARLY lack the skills to cover man-to-man, are they so often put in single-coverage situations?
Oh, well. No need to panic just yet. The season is still young and we're a game ahead of where we were at this point last season. Next up, the Cleveland Browns. Just what the doctor ordered, bruthas & sistas!
