Key Stats & Facts
• Tommy Maddox is OKAY!!! Easily the most important stat! God bless you, Tommy, and get well soon! You and your family remain in our prayers.

• Time of Possession: Titans 36:33, Steelers 23:27. Let's face it... these guys OWNED us. 9 time out of 10, if you loose the ball control battle this badly, you're gonna lose the game.

• Total rushing yards: Titans 121, Steelers 45. The defense deserves much of the blame for this loss, but when our leading rusher (Amos Zereoue) gains a pitiful 16 yards on 9 carries, you can pretty much chalk up a loss.

• Titans 3rd-down conversions: 12 of 19 (63%). Consider that you can take away two of those failed conversions because it was late in the game when it didn't really matter, and the Titans had a 70.5% 3rd down conversion rate. That's disgusting.

• 3 turnovers, 2 missed chip-shot FGs. Leaving sure points on the field AND losing the turnover battle will kill 'ya almost every time.

Reaction to Week 11: Titans 31, Steelers 23
Just a Game...
Game lost, prayers answered
Article by McMillen & Wife

You have to wonder what God's plan for Tommy Maddox is. Seeing Tommy up and around, doing press conferences and talking about getting back on the practice field (as soon as Friday) was a bit like watching a scene from "Heaven Can Wait." Rumor has it that "Buck Henry" and "Mr. Jordan" were spotted hanging around behind the scenes at Tommy's press conference.

Now if you missed the guardian angel reference above, you'll have to rent the movie because it'll take me too long to explain it in detail. It's worth watching, if for no other reason than a scene at the end of the movie pitting the Los Angeles Rams agains the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. Now this was in '78, before the Steelers and Rams actually met in the big one, which turned out to be shockingly prophetic. In the movie, the owner of the Rams dies suspiciously leaving his evil blonde wife as owner of a team headed to the Super Bowl. One year later, that exact scenario played out for the real-life Rams when owner Carroll Rosenbloom died and Georgia Frontiere took over. Creepy, eh?

I saw this movie in the theater as a young'un and will say I was quite bent out of shape about spending my allowance on it. The NERVE of those Hollywood-types portraying the Rams as beating the Steelers in the Super Bowl! Not to mention the sappy, mushy love story was not at all what I was expecting going in. Nine-year-olds aren't into that crap.

Sorry. Back to the present.

Tommy's condition is an answered prayer. I mentioned this previously on the message board, but I think it's worth repeating because I'm sure it was a reaction shared all over the country and not just in our household. The McMillen family (including our two children) has been on our knees for Tommy and his family this past week. He was the last thing I thought of as I drifted off to sleep Sunday night and first thing I thought of when I woke up Monday morning. I doubt there are many Steelers fans out there who weren't glued to their sets/computers early in the week hoping for any morsel of good news. I'll tell 'ya, I look at the guy and it's almost like seeing someone back from the dead. I was so sure he was paralyzed the way he laid there on the field after the hit. Thank God Tommy is okay.

Tommy seems eager to put this behind him and move on. More power to him. Perhaps it's because he doesn't remember much. Whatever the case, he's a better man than I am. I've gotta be honest... if I was in Tommy's shoes and went through a scare like that, I'd be done playing. Football? What's a football? Never heard of it. Man, the things that would flash through your mind while you're laying there on the field. I can only imagine. In fact, I don't want to imagine. Never hugging your wife or holding your kids again? Not worth it. It's one thing to see it happen to another player and move on... but when it happens to you? Call me chicken-shit, but I doubt I could step back out on the field again.

Guess it's a good thing for the Steelers they've got Tommy back there instead of me (slight understatement). He is an amazing individual.

As for the game itself, well... I don't really wanna talk about it. Let's bury that horrific showing in a deep hole. If it was an accurate portrayal of our team (particularly our defense), we're doomed. It was the same crap as we saw in weeks 1 & 2. In all honesty, I'm not yet convinced that my diagnosis of the Steelers' problem following the Raiders game was wrong. If you haven't seen what I said, read it, mull it over and tell me what you think. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen little to indicate I was.

Perhaps the most alarming thing I noticed that few have mentioned from last Sunday is how completely the Titans dominated our offensive line. It was embarassing. Amos had a total of 4 yards rushing until late in the 4th quarter. The Titans spanked a supposed strentgh of our team. As a wise man once said, lot's 'O work to do.

Time to move on. Next up, the Bungles. The last time we played 'em, we were in a must-win situation. Well, guess what? Here we go again! Good luck, Kordell!

Until then, bruthas & sistas!

Comment: MADDOX/DEFENSE/STEWART

MADDOX RECOVERY IS REMARKABLE, IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE THAT THE DOCTORS SAY THAT HE'S JUST LIKE HE WAS BEFORE THE HIT. PRAYERS MUST HAVE BEEN ANSWERED !!!!! I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT OUR D. EVEN IN THE GAMES WE HAVE WON THEY JUST DONT LOOK LIKE THE SAME D AS LAST YEAR, CAN THEY FIX IT? I THINK THEY CAN BY GETTING A PUSH UP FRONT TO HIDE OUR SECONDARY. SOMETIMES I WONDER WHY WE RUSH OUR 3 INTERIOR LINEMAN OTHER THAN TO JUST TAKE UP SPACE, I'M NOT SAYING THEY HAVE TO GET SACKS, JUST A PUSH A COUPLE YARDS TORWARD THE QB, THAT THROWS OFF THE THREE STEP DROP AND THE 5-10 YARD OUT. GETTING THAT PUSH IS SORT OF LIKE A DOMINO EFFECT, IT FREE'S UP OUR BLITZERS MORE, THE BACK MAY HAVE TO CHIP A TACKLE INSTEAD OF A BLITZING LINEBACKER, OR THE QB DOESNT MAKE AS ACCURATE OF A THROW. I THINK JOEL STEED WAS VERY GOOD AT GETTING A PUSH. HERE LIES THE PROBLEM..... CAN WE GET THE PUSH. I DONT BELIEVE THATS OUR ONLY PROBLEM BUT IF COULD JUST FIX ONE THING THAT WOULD BE IT ( WELL MAYBE TACKLING ALSO). IF STEWART HAS A GOOD GAME WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT USING HIM A BIT MORE WHEN THE DEFENSE IS IS GETTING TO MADDOX ???? MADDOX IS GOOD BUT HE'S HUMAN AND LOOKS AVERAGE WHEN THERE IS A RUSH.

Comment: Re: MADDOX/DEFENSE/STEWART

Most QB's look average under a strong pass rush. Protecting Tommy is the key, and our line didn't do it last Sunday.

As for getting a push, no, I don't think we can do it. Our D-linemen are run-stoppers. Period. By design, our linebackers pressure the QB. Unfortunately, teams have discovered a relatively simple way to neutralize our linebackers (and hence, our pass rush) by spreading us out. No pass rush = a torched secondary.

Missed tackles have cost us dearly this year. I'd wager we've missed more tackles in our 4 losses this season than we did in 18 friggin' games last year. It's dispicable.

Comment: Brown-Bungs pre-game

First things first:

Cleveland Browns
Baltimore Browns
And...Ahhh Yesss...The Cin City Browns

In tribute to Richard Harris (not really):

"Someone left their pumpkin out in the rain...

...but I don't think I can take it cause the stains are too far gone to bake it and..."

Ok enough torture.
These Lames can go 3-13 and beat us 2 of the three, so don't anyone think that those moldy pumpkins are pushovers. Give 'em a spark and they will take advantage of it. The Steelers are the walking wounded and the players this week need to as Bill Cowher said; "step up".

I really like what Bill had to say in his press conf. but he is wrong about one thing. One crucial thing.

We are not "one game ahead"! We are 1/2 game ahead and since the Clowns North don't have a tie we have no tie breaker with them for beating them twice...Follow?

That tie is a dark spot and now is the time to pit it as far behind us as possible. That equals 6 wins in a row to end the regular season. Nothing more nothing less.

PS: Just cause I'm feelin' nice: They're the Bungles. They're the Browns (south), hence "The Brown-Bungs" prep-H anyone?

Warren Beatty?

Warren Beatty as Tommy Maddox?

I saw the movie too!

Tim, put the NyQuill down and back away from your keyboard...

PS. You owe Tommy Maddox an apology.

Tommy, sometimes you elicit a good laugh... and sometimes, a HUGE sigh.

I not talking about today's Warren Beatty, the commie-lib pseudo-politician. But Warren Beatty in 1978 could've played a pretty good Tommy Maddox. Could you get any more down to earth than his Joe Pendleton character? Add in the screen wife and kids and you're there.

And please, let's not get into a philosophical discussion about the movie, okay? My stomach is still weak from the flu.

But while we're on the subject, who does anyone else out there think would make a good Tommy Maddox? Robert Urich? Hey, he did Rocky Bleier, why not Tommy? Or did Urich die? That could be a problem. Maybe a younger Tom Hanks? I dunno... I suppose Hanks could scream "Wilson!!!" at a football and it would kinda make sense. Why not?

Kind of a weird discussion, but what the hey? I'm medicated (nice call on the NyQuill, Tommy).

Comment: Joe Pendleton

Not a bad call on the movie....but I gotta say you've given up some vital information about yourself. If you can remember that movie from 1978 , that makes you an old geezer like me. ( Class of 1978 ) Tyrone , Pa. ...but the character is a good comparison. I think Miracle Man Maddox is gonna be back in the saddle and breaking more records in no time flat!

Comment: Re: Joe Pendleton

Class of '86, my man. That might've been the first movie I ever went to sans mommy and/or older brother.

As for being an "old geezer," don't EVEN lump me in there yet, bro. I've gotta get some wrinkles or something first. Besides, anyone who had a chance to live through and experience the '70s Steelers first-hand isn't old... they're damn lucky!

2 years after my YOUNGEST son was born.....Now I REALLY feel old....But it wasn't all for naught....I've gotten to see some great football in those years. Oh , yeah , and with 3 sons and a daughter , I have a lot of screaming Steelers fans every Sunday. ( not to mention the wife......you cant forget the wife.)

...it's the big F-ing Q (D.Leary)calling you back to it's dark green web of deceit.

Warren Beatty NEVER. The contrast in the two men is astounding and Warren didn't get that way in his later years(although the Parallax View was a goody).

Trouble is, A. most hollywood icons are very short and B. Your making way too much out of a fluke injury. Tommy Maddox is ALIVE and WELL and Playing Football (soon) in Pittsburgh. It isn't Viet Nam.

Robert Urich died in April @ the age of 55

P.S. -- Since I can see a BIG Q laden retort coming...

Dennis Quaid.
Author: McMillen & Wife
Comment: Re: Dennis Quaid

Hmmm... Dennis Quaid. Yeah, I think he'll do. It's settled.

Sandy suggested Mel Gibson, but that's her form answer for any role. I suspect she'd pay to see him playing the lead in "Ike & Tina" (with Mel as Tina in a tassled dress). Don't ask.

BTW, I'm not "making too much out of a fluke injury." I'm not seriously suggesting there be a movie on the man based on last Sunday! Just using the movie to have a clever angle on the story. 99% jest. Gotta have something to write about and reminisce about other than x's & o's, or where's the fun?

Now, if Tommy leads us to a Super Bowl victory, THEN we can start talking movies... :-)

Think I'm finally over the hump with this flu thing.

P.S. -- If there ever is a movie, I'm thinking John Ritter could play the role of Tim cOUCH...

Ok , Jack Ritter ....that's ingenious , a modern-day slapstick artist....but what is this thing with uor wives and Mel Gibson ? Criminey ! I'd smack him right in the mouth if I was in shape ! ....And not to be cruel , but how 'bout ERKEL for Kordell ? ....just messin wit ' cha.
